Wildflowers set to return to Waterlow Road
Vigo Parish Council will once again support a “no mow” initiative along the Waterlow Road verges this spring and summer, leaving the grass uncut throughout May, June, and July.
Following the success of last year’s project, the council aims to further encourage the growth of wildflowers and create valuable habitats for pollinators and other wildlife.
The 2025 initiative delivered impressive results. A plant survey carried out at the end of the season recorded around 31 species, with indications of an increasingly diverse grassland influenced by nearby woodland. Notable species included Common Spotted Orchid, Pyramid Orchid, and Bitter Vetch, alongside locally uncommon plants such as Musk Mallow and Dog-Violet. These findings highlight how allowing verges to grow naturally, even for a short period, can significantly boost biodiversity.
To ensure a balance between environmental benefits and public safety, a one-metre strip along the edges of the verges will be kept regularly mown. This will maintain clear visibility for drivers at junctions and prevent grass from encroaching onto footpaths, ensuring safe access for pedestrians.
The council plans to repeat the plant survey this year to monitor how the diversity and abundance of species develop over time. By giving nature a little more space, the verges will develop naturally over the summer months, supporting insects, birds, and the wider ecosystem.
This initiative demonstrates how small changes in land management can have a lasting positive impact on both local wildlife and the beauty of the parish.
