Wildflowers thriving on Waterlow Road
These beautiful photographs, taken today by our contractor while out mowing the edges of the verges to maintain clear sight lines, show just how much wildlife can benefit from a thoughtful approach to verge management.
By allowing the verges on Waterlow Road to grow during May, June and July, a remarkable variety of wildflowers has flourished, including Pyramidal Orchids, Common Spotted Orchids, Oxeye Daisies, Self-heal, Buttercups and the striking orange Fox-and-Cubs.
Managing the edges while allowing the main areas to flower helps balance safety with biodiversity, providing valuable habitat and food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, while bringing colour and interest to the village.
These photographs are a wonderful reminder that with a little patience and careful management, our verges can become thriving havens for wildlife.
